Rivals Facility Article

In the Rivals article Cobb said the ultimate goal is to have 30,000 seats in Kidd Brewer Stadium. One obvious issue is how to deal with the track. I still hold out hope of a new track facility somewhere on campus, but if that doesn't work out some new seats would have to go in the endzone. Nevada Reno has dealt with the issue in a unique way. Build seats which allow the track to run under them. I was in Reno earlier this year at a trade show and stopped in at Nevada's stadium and snapped these pictures.

Do they actually use the track for hosting meets? In looking at their sport teams it seems they only have women's track. They hosted some meets at the Bill Cosby Indoor Center, but did not host any outdoor meets. The article did mention they had the Mac* outdoor track for practice.

SO DG, what do you estimate in the seating capacity for each end zone. They appear to have more in one of the end zones from looking at their website.

I'd guess one endzone probably seats around 1500, while the larger one seats around 3000.

Man, i hope we can figure something out with the track, so we don't have to do that.

I am getting much better vibes on relocating the track than I did a year ago. If a suitable place can be found and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to grade it down, I believe it will eventually happen.

I still say elevate it, put it on stilts in the parking lot.

Wondering how you still feel about the issue. With the fact that WHS is now up for sale? Could we use their track and bring it up to college standards and use their two gyms for BBall practice. Turn some classrooms into a strength and conditioning facility and others into offices. Then what you have is more space on campus for expansion with Varsity Gym no longer being needed. Just an idea.

Not a bad one - in fact if done right you could get rid of Varsity all together and add some more parking (which is by far the biggest problem on campus that just never seems to get addressed).

Wait... Watauga High is up for sale?? Where are they moving to? I think if that's right and it's feasible for the University, it would be smart to acquire any nearby land possible as the town and school continue to grow. We're gonna need all the space we can get.

It's true what you say about parking as well, but I'd hate to see them tear down Varsity gym... that place is basically a historic landmark by now. I think I'd rather see it renovated than torn down.

WHS is moving to their new digs in 2010 off of 421 near the humane society.

I believe the university is already planning on using it as a nursing facility - but I may be wrong.
